SMALL TASK MODULE 2 PAGE 17

1) The internet is a worldwide system of computer networks in which users at any one computer can get information from another computer. It began in the late 1960s when the US Department of Defense wanted to establish a nationwide computer that would continue to function even when a large portion of it is destroyed in a nuclear war or natural disaster. Another aim was also to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university be able to ‘talk to’ research computers at other universities. Today the internet is accessible to millions of people worldwide through existing public telecommunication networks. Electronic mail or email is the most widely used application on the net. There are also other features, some of which are downloading software, participating in interactive forums, relay chat where you can send messages in ‘real time’, storing and retrieving data files. The Internet has a host of capabilities.

2) The World Wide Web is one of the most popular and important systems of the Internet (www or called ‘the Web). The web in an ‘information highway’ that allow users around the world to access information promptly and easily via search engines such as Google. In most web sites, certain words or phrases appear in text of a different colour than the rest and underlined. When you choose one of these words or phrases, you will be transferred to the site or page that is relevant to the words or phrase. Its outstanding feature is hypertext or links which is a method of cross referencing. On a website are buttons, images or portions of images that are ‘clickable’ and when you see a pointer changes into a hand, it indicates that you can click and be transferred to another site. For any organization or individual wishing to distribute information, the Web makes it easy and cost effective as compared to a book. Moreover information can be amended, revised and updated anytime unlike a printed publication.

3) I totally agree that the Internet has revolutionised communication in libraries
